An official of a provincial council for the Lau group of islands in Fiji says the islands have tremendous untapped tourism potential but need to develop the industry in a sustainable manner.
Lau Provincial Council official Timoci Beitaki said the attractions include culture and traditions unique to the people of Lau.
“These are God given resources to the vanua and as custodians we should manage it wisely for our benefit,” Beitaki said.
He cautioned members of the Lau province to tread cautiously into tourism in a sustainable manner.
Lau only has a few backpacker resorts in Lakeba and Vanua Balavu and has no five-star properties.
“The only tourism activities we have are when super yachts and cruise liners visit the Lau Group,” Beitaki said.
“They sometimes visit our villages and buy handicrafts and give small incentives for our livelihood.”
Beitaki was speaking at a tourism awareness workshop for Lau tikina representatives in Suva yesterday.
