Fiji’s new police chief says the police force will be taking measures to tighten border control, indicating that the recent discovery of hard drugs such as cocaine is a major concern.
Acting Police Commissioner Joeli Baleilevuka said it was important to have tight security measures to protect the nation from illegal activities.
“That falls in our strategic objectives. It’s about the prevention of crimes,” Baleilevuka said.
“Border control is included in every country either by land or by sea so there will be a need to increase officers,” he said.
He assured that police would do everything in their powers to upgrade security at the airports.
“In the recent past hard drugs were detected at the border. That’s the reason why we must strengthen the policing of our borders. Of course these are going to come in and our work is to detect them.”
An alleged airport drug ring involving the transfer of amphetamines and a one kilogram pack of cocaine found at the Suva wharf have been among recent drug finds at Fiji’s borders.
