People in Fiji are being urged to use water sparingly so that the already low supplies in some parts of the country will last for a dry spell that is expected to continue for the next few months.
A government statement said that the dry spell that began in around January this year is likely to continue.
It said that the most affected areas are the western and northern divisions while there is a moderate effect on the central and eastern divisions.
“Some intermittent showers recently has replenished the water sources in these divisions,” the statement said.
It said that both the western and northern divisions received below average rainfall from January to July this year.
Lautoka received 551 mm of rain for the first seven months which is similar to the 1983 and 1998 drought spells.
”The flow at the water intakes is decreasing, especially, at Buabua and Nalau in Lautoka and in the Rakiraki area.”
”In view of the above situation members of the public are reminded to use water wisely and sparingly to ensure there is enough water in the catchment areas to last for the duration of the dry season.”
