Upcoming health reforms in Fiji will require medical practitioners to apply a more modern approach to areas such as mental health and HIV/AIDS treatment says Minister for Health Dr Neil Sharma.
Sharma made the comments at the opening of the annual national workshop for dieticians and nutritionists yesterday.
He said the Allied Health Workers Decree was in line with other medical documents waiting to be vetted and progressed at the Solicitor General’s Office.
“Also mental health and the HIV promulgation are aligned to surface before it. Once decreed modern ways will need to be applied to continuing professional education to maintain your annual practicing licence,” he said.
“Some of you have demonstrated professional competence by writing professional articles, attending interdisciplinary workshops and that is indeed the way to go.”
He said others should learn from active colleagues adding that participants should start up some voluntary scheme of on-going education after this workshop.
Past mismanagement in the distribution network of powdered milk for children would not be tolerated, he said.
“Low salt and sugar initiatives in the hospital setting have been undertaken and I have directed a 20 per cent reduction in purchase and consumption of both items to address the non-communicable diseases we are facing in Fiji.”
