A group of Chinese investors are in Fiji on a mission to explore further investment possibilities following a visit by Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama and Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum to the Shanghai World Expo in China last month.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the visitors are currently engaged in a series of meetings with various government departments and agencies and the private sector.
A government statement said the group had also visited different sites on Viti Levu and have shown interest in establishing a port and a cement factory in the Western Division.
They met with Minister for Foreign Affairs Ratu Inoke Kubuabola yesterday and were scheduled to meet with Fiji Electricity Authority chief executive officer Hasmukh Patel.
“We are of the view that we can help Fiji which has immense potential,” an investor said through an interpreter at the meeting with Kubuabola.
“We want to build a ship building yard, a port and also a cement factory in Lautoka.”
Kubuabola said another Chinese company had progressed talks with the Prime Minister with an option to set up a cement factory in either Ba or Vanua Levu.
