Mel Gibson crashed his car Sunday night in Malibu, California, and managed to escape unhurt following the accident.

Police said Gibson lost control of his car and crashed into a rocky hillside at around 8:35pm. The actor's car, a 2008 Maserati, had to be towed from the scene, TMZ reported.

California Highway Patrol (CHP) Public Information Officer Leland Tang said Gibson told officers he did not know how he lost control of the vehicle. He denied that he was using a cell phone at the time of the accident.

When asked if he had fallen asleep, Gibson did not give a definitive answer but repeatedly said "I don't know how the car left the roadway," Mr Tang said.

The CHP report of the incident said, "Mr. Gibson supplied all the pertinent information to the officers at the scene, gave a statement, and received a ride home from a friend."

The report also made clear that there was no suspicion Gibson had been drinking.

Sunday's crash was not the first car-related incident that Gibson has been involved with in Malibu.

The Mad Max star - who is currently embroiled in assault allegations leveled at him by his former Russian girlfriend, Oksana Grigorieva - was arrested there on a DUI charge in 2006.

In a bad-tempered rant, Gibson went on to tell his arresting officer that Jews were "responsible for all the wars in the world."

He later apologised for his "despicable" behavior.
