A top US senator urged Defense Secretary Robert Gates Monday to launch "a major investigation" into the leak of a massive cache of Pentagon files and reports on the war in Afghanistan.
"These leaks are a serious breach of national security," Senate Intelligence Committee chair Dianne Feinstein said in a statement after the whistleblower website Wikileaks released the roughly 92,000 documents.
"I ask the secretary of defense to launch a major investigation and bring the individual or individuals responsible for this to account," said Feinstein, a Democrat from California.
Her comments came after Gates spokesman Geoff Morrell said the Pentagon was investigating who leaked the trove of information and trying to determine whether the disclosure placed US troops at risk.
"Our first priority is to figure out whether there's anything in here... that could endanger our forces," Morrell told Fox News.
"But, obviously, we want to figure out who did this and make sure there isn't more coming and others who are leaking this."
