Reserve Bank of Fiji Governor Sada Reddy has welcomed Digicel’s new mobile money service launched today saying such new innovations show continued confidence in Fiji.
The service offers a range of mobile financial capabilities including the ability to transfer money to friends and family nationwide, top up mobile phone and pay Digicel post-paid bills.
Reddy said the service will support rural people who do not have bank accounts and follows the launch of a similar service by rival Vodafone Fiji.
Digicel chief executive officer Matt Davey said the new service is being offered in partnership with Post Fiji.
“It will see Digicel phones become electronic wallets offering customers a convenient and secure way to transfer money to any mobile phone in Fiji,” he said.
Davey said they also plan to expand the mobile money facility for the payment of bills and will be partnering with Westpac Banking Corporation soon.
“We are also hopeful to partner with the other major banks in the country,” he added.
Transfers at any one time can be a maximum of $1000 and a minimum of 50 cents.
Digicel customers can register for the mobile money service for free by dialing *888# from today.
