Fiji naval boats have distributed food rations and relief supplies to at least seven islands that were devastated by the recent Cyclone Tomas.
The National Disaster Management office has confirmed that the naval boats have visited Cikobia, Naqelelevu, Vanuabalavu, Totoya, Moala, Cicia and Katafaga.
“Three naval boats are already in the islands and the fourth is still in Suva with medical supplies,” Disaster Management operations officer Anthony Blake told FijiLive.
“The Government vessel MV Rayawa left Suva yesterday taking with it more supplies and later this afternoon, the MV Iloilovatu will also leave,” he said.
Also according to Blake, more relief supplies are expected from Australia and New Zealand this Wednesday and these will include tents, tarpaulins and blankets.
Blake said the RFMF engineers, Public Works Department and the department of Rural Housing are currently working on a plan to develop temporary housing and reconstruction of structures.
About 800 structures including homes were either damaged or destroyed by Cyclone Tomas.
