Disaster management authorities cannot substantiate the number of people without shelter in cyclone-hit areas because they are currently being housed with relatives, neighbours or friends.
Acting DISMAC Director, Pajiliai Dobui told FijiLive this culture of social obligation had caused problems getting data on those affected in the northern and eastern islands.
“As of now we still not sure how many people are homeless and are being sheltered either in evacuation centers or by their friends, neighbors or relatives,” he said.
The real cost of damages caused by cyclone Tomas is expected to be established next, he said.
“This will be done once we receive reports from the ground assessment team on damages,” he added.
Cyclone Tomas battered Fiji’s northern and eastern islands including Lau, Lomaiviti, and eastern most parts of the North.
