The United States, China and the United Kingdom have made contributions to the Fiji Red Cross Society to assist in relief efforts in Fiji.
The US is providing $191,000. The US Embassy in Suva said it will continue to work with government agencies and non-government organisations following the devastation caused by Tropical Cyclone Tomas.
China has provided $96,000 in emergency aid towards disaster relief and rehabilitation efforts.
The donation has been handed over to the Fiji Red Cross Society in Suva.
An additional $50,000 was handed over towards the PM’s National Disaster Relief and Rehabilitation Fund.
In a condolence message to his Fiji counterpart Ratu Inoke Kubuabola, China's Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi said he was shocked to learn of the suffering caused by Cyclone Tomas.
He said he believed that the people of Fiji would conquer the disaster and rebuild their homes under the leadership of the Fiji government.
The British High Commission in Suva has also announced that it will make a contribution of $295,000 to the Fiji Red Cross to assist in its relief and rehabilitation efforts.
British High Commissioner Mac McLachlan said that by making the contribution available, the UK hoped the Fiji Red Cross will be able to address quickly some of the most immediate needs of those affected by Cyclone Tomas.
“Our sympathy is with the many thousands in evacuation centres, those who have suffered disruption to their lives and livelihoods and those who remain without access to basic amenities,” he said.
