The Australian and New Zealand governments have responded to Fiji’s plea for relief assistance dispatching two C-130 Hercules planes with supplies, the first landing in Suva 10am Wednesday.
Disaster management director Pajiliai Dobui confirmed to FijiLive a New Zealand Air Force Hercules plane was scheduled to land at Nausori 10am today, while the Australian Air Force one would arrive at 3pm.
Dobui said they sought the assistance through FRANZ, a government relief assistance agency consisting of France, Australia and New Zealand.
Dobui said France yesterday had dispatched a plane to take aerial photos of damaged areas, particularly in the north.
He said they were most concerned about Cikobia who they believe was worst hit by Tomas.
Communication with the island had been severed since Sunday.
Dobui said the New Zealand plane would fly off to Labasa with supplies on board to cater for the Northern division.
"The Australian supply is for the Eastern division, particularly islands in the Lomaiviti and Lau group," Dobui said.
Supplies from the Australian plane would be transported by Fiji government ships to these areas since there are no landing facilities available there.
