The National Youth public holiday earmarked for Monday next week has been postponed indefinitely due to loss of working days caused by Hurricane Tomas which has now left the Fiji group.
Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama said the nation had to compensate for “lost days of productivity and education" resulting from the storm.
“The public holiday for National Youth Day set for next Monday 22nd March will now be a normal work and school day,” Bainimarama said.
Schools had closed since Friday noon, while businesses including the public service shut down for two days after the weekend.
“The National Youth Day celebrations shall be held on a date to be determined.”
The PM said government was now assessing the damage caused by Tomas, particularly in the North, Lomaiviti and Lau groups who faced the full brunt of the storm.
Repair works on restoring communication with Taveuni had also begun, disaster management officials said.
The curfew imposed since midnight Sunday has been lifted and local flights between Nadi and Suva only were resuming Wednesday.
