Shops in three of Fiji’s four cyclone-struck divisions have been told to close for a curfew extended until tomorrow morning.
Government spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Neumi Leweni said shop owners were being directed to close their businesses immediately.
The curfew for the central and eastern divisions was lifted briefly this morning and will now expire at 7am tomorrow.
The northern division continues to remain under a curfew.
Leweni said government is taking more stringent measures to ensure that lives are not lost unnecessarily. He said the public must heed this warning.
“We don’t want to lose any lives just because of people’s inability to heed the emergency warnings. It is for this
reason that the police will now arrest those seen on the roads without an official pass,” he said.
Leweni said the police will now arrest people found loitering during the curfew period.
He said many people in the central division are still moving about despite the announcement of the curfew.
The only people allowed to travel are those directly involved in essential services.
“Even these people have to secure official passes from the police,” he said.
