A storm water surge has hit the island of Nairai in the Lomaiviti group, it has been confirmed.
According to DISMAC operations officer Anthony Blake, the storm surge was a ‘significant’ one.
“One of the villages was completely inundated,” Blake said.
“So we are advising people in nearby islands to move inland. There may not be flooding in the islands but storm surges such as that are highly likely to happen,” he said.
There have no reports of casualties on the island, with a population of almost 5000 and located about 100 kilometres to the west of Fiji’s capital Suva.
