Firefighters in Fiji’s northern town of Labasa battled a blaze in raging winds to stop a supermarket fire from spreading to a service station at midnight last night.
The National Fire Authority said the blaze broke out about five kilometres from Labasa town at the Highway Fuel and Groceries Supermarket.
Firefighters managed to contain the fire within a supermarket preventing its spread to the adjoining service station.
Chief fire officer Tupou Saubuliniyau said the firefighters did well especially under the very difficult weather conditions.
“It was difficult battling the fire during strong winds and rain given the potential high risk to the adjoining service station,” he said.
The northern division has been experiencing strong winds since last night because of Hurricane Tomas.
Meanwhile a family of three lost their lean-to house in another fire incident in Nausori yesterday afternoon.
Investigations by NFA indicated the fire was caused by unattended cooking.
The NFA has recorded 62 fires between December 2009 and the second week of March.
