The islands of Cikobia and northern Lau in Fiji are experiencing very strong winds at the moment, disaster management (DISMAC) officials in Suva have confirmed.
While no reports of damage or casualty have been received, DISMAC has warned people to stay indoors and take every precaution to ensure their safety.
“Right now, we have devastating winds battering the islands of Cikobia, northern Lau, Rabi, Kioa and Taveuni,” one DISMAC official told FijiLive.
“There are also very strong winds and rough seas reported in Koro and other islands in the Lomaiviti group,” the official said.
Tomas has been moving slowly but steadily towards Fiji’s northern division with the cyclone center now almost reaching Cikobia.
The hurricane is expected to pass over Cikobia around midday today.
A total of 2536 evacuees have so far reported to evacuation centres in the northern division alone.
The western division is not expected to feel much of the cyclone’s force.
