The nationwide curfew imposed on Fiji midnight Sunday has been temporarily lifted, except for the Northern division.
Police spokesperson Atunaisa Rokomuri said the whole of Vanua Levu and islands in the Northern division were still under curfew as heavy rains and strong winds from Hurricane Tomas lash the area.
Earlier, Permanent Secretary for Information Lieutenant Colonel Neumi Leweni said the measure was temporary and will be reviewed during the day.
“The curfew is lifted for now as the hurricane is slow moving and won’t reach us till after midday,” Leweni said.
People were seen waiting for public transport in Suva this morning but there were no buses seen on the road.
Bus Association executives announced on radio Sunday night that buses were not running today.
Meanwhile, evacuation centres in Taveuni have over 1000 people seeking refuge as strong winds destroyed seven homes in Qamea overnight.
Latest figures say 2558 evacuees are now occupying 48 evacuation centres in the Northern division.
Strong winds also continue to whip Savusavu, which is still without electricity since Sunday night.
At 9am this morning, Tomas was expected to pass over Cikobia and locate 90km off Labasa.
