Fiji may experience cyclones even after the traditional November-to-April cyclone season has ended says the acting director of the Disaster Management Office (DISMAC), Pajiliai Dobui.

Dobui told FijiLive that eight of the 10 cyclones predicted for the South-West Pacific in the current season had already formed.

“I’m worried that even in April and May, after the cyclone season has ended, we may have some more cyclones,” he said.

“We’ve become vulnerable and weather patterns are more risky.”

Dobui said DISMAC had been fully activated following this morning’s weather alert and emergency operations centres at the divisional and district levels were now operational.

He said all evacuation centres around the country had also been told to be ready for any evacuation needs.

“We have more than 24 hours to get ready,” he said, referring to predictions that the full effect of Cyclone Tomas would be felt on Sunday even though it is expected to enter Fiji waters tomorrow.

“The cyclone’s path is subject to change but it’s best that our preparedness is sound enough to face it.”
