Fiji’s commissioner of prisons Brigadier-General Iowane Naivalurua has made it compulsory for all prison officers to acquire blackbelts in Hapkido.

Prisons spokesperson Fred Elbourne said the extra skills would equip their wardens and better overall performance.

Government is hoping hapkido would instill discipline into its Security and Defense forces.

The first lot of black belt recipients underwent strict training recently that included a daily 10 kilometer road run and
100 fingertip press-ups, apart from having learnt 10 individual fighting styles and combination of techniques.

They included 58 military and naval officers, 11 prison officers and nine police officers.
