The Fiji Bus Operators Association (FBOA) say plans to convert bus coupons for students into an electronic swiping system is news to them and that they had not been consulted by Government on the issue.

Government announced yesterday that it was looking at ending the coupon system and issuing students with electronic cards.

“We are in the dark at the moment regarding this and we are hoping to meet with the authorities soon,” FBOA president Zane Dean told FijiLive.

Permanent secretary in the Prime Minister’s office, Colonel Pio Tikoduadua told FijiLive they were looking at implementing the electronic card system in the future, but could not give a time-frame.

“This will be implemented once consultations are over between the company we are dealing with and the FBOA,” he said.

Tikoduadua said the cost of implementation will be discussed between the FBOA and the company that will be installing the system in the buses.

He did not disclose the name of the company.
