Fiji police have issued a strong warning to all taxi and public service vehicle (PSV) drivers that they will not condone any dangerous driving on the roads.

Director Traffic SSP Mahesh Mishra told FijiLive these drivers should be exemplary when behind the wheel.
“The defensive driving tests compulsory for all PSV drivers provide enough knowledge for them to prevent accidents and not cause them,” Mishra said.

He said all drivers, including those on learner’s permits, should record zero alcohol limits when pulled over for breathalyzer tests.

The warnings come after a taxi driver this week caused the death of a two-year-old in a hit and run that also injured two others.

The driver, 43 year old Bob Rakesh Lal of Kinoya, is in police custody and will appear in Court on March 23.

“He has been charged for causing death, dangerous driving, causing bodily harm and refusing to undergo a breathalyzer test,” Mishra said.

Police have booked 7000 drivers since January of which 200 were for drunk driving.
