Fiji’s health ministry is looking at improving the quality of drinking water in rural areas in a bid to minimize numbers affected by the recent typhoid outbreak that has impinged on 112 lives.
Deputy permanent secretary for public health, Dr. Josefa Koroivueta told FijiLive they were primarily focusing on upgrading the quality of water supply to the squatter and rural areas.
“We will improve water supply in areas outside the town which we regard as the rural water supply, particularly areas where there is no planned water chlorination process,” Koroivueta said.
He said they would target the country as a whole, and not just the typhoid affected areas.
But he could not put a figure on the cost of the exercise, but said it would be on a large scale.
“We feel that unless we get this right, we will not be able to control outbreaks like this.”
