Fiji Police are considering whether to pursue fresh charges against Fiji-born entrepreneur Ballu Khan after he was implicated in the judgment of eight men found guilty of planning to kill Fiji’s Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama.
Khan was mentioned many times during the case and Justice Paul Madigan when sentencing the eight men said “he had no doubt that the plot to kill the PM was hatched, orchestrated and directed by Ballu Khan”.
Police Commissioner Esala Teleni said they would have to consult with the Director of Public Prosecutions to see if pursuing Khan was legally possible.
Khan was initially charged with the eight but was acquitted in 2008 by Justice Andrew Bruce on the grounds that Khan’s rights was breached by Police and Military officers when he was detained for a substantial period of time after his arrest in November 2007.
He has since returned to New Zealand where he permanently resides.
Justice Bruce had also put a permanent stay on all proceedings against Khan.
FijiLive sought clarification from the Director of Public Prosecutions, Aca Rayawa if they were going to appeal the stay order on Khan of which the reply was “no comment”.
