The Fiji Government has not made any decision yet on voluntary redundancy, it has been confirmed.
According to the Permanent Secretary in the Public Service Commission, Parmesh Chand, the issue of redundancy is being considered on a case by case basis and based on whatever is in the provisions in terms of law.
He explained that the issue of surplus workers arose for the Department of Water and Sewerage when it was being corporatised to the Fiji Water Authority.
“…. of course Government had an obligation to ensure they were dealt with properly in terms of whatever their entitlements are.”
Cabinet he said, accordingly agreed that all entitlements be sorted out including leave, overtime and on top of that, they be provided redundancy payout based on whatever is in the legislation.
He confirmed that the details are being worked out in collaboration with the Ministry of Finance.
