Cyclone Mick changed direction overnight and is now projected to hit Fiji’s main island later today.
The category 1 cyclone, the first of eight to 11 expected in the 2009-2010 Pacific summer, was earlier projected to move between Viti Levu and Vanua Levu.
Director of Meteorology Rajendra Prasad said a gail warning is now in force for the entire Fiji group.
“Damaging gail force winds are already hitting the Yasawas and Mamanuca. We are expecting Viti Levu to be hit this afternoon,” he adds.
Prasad has warned of heavy rain to continue with extensive flash flooding in low lying areas.
Eleven people died earlier this year when heavy flooding occurred in most parts of the western and northern western parts of Viti Levu.
