Bystanders used buckets of water to douse a fire in a 64-seater bus as it carried commuters to Fiji’s capital, Suva this morning.
The George Transport Company-owned bus had stopped beside Makoi service station to pick up a passenger when smoke began to appear from the engine compartment in the front and beneath the bus.
Firefighters arrived at the scene to find people with buckets of water had successfully extinguished the fire.
No one was injured during the incident.
National Fire Authority Acting Chief Fire Officer Tupou Saubulinayau said preliminary investigations indicate that mechanical and electrical related problems in the engine compartment caused the fire.
He said further investigations with LTA will be conducted.
Saubulinayau confirmed that NFA has offered fire safety and preparedness training to the Fiji Bus operators Association, but there has been no response to date.
