Fiji will turn its clock forward by one hour from the 29th of this month to April 25, 2010.
The re-introduction of the daylight saving was approved by Cabinet in its meeting last Tuesday.
Daylight saving was introduced in 1998 and 1999, but only then it was from the beginning of November to the end of February.
Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum said that in light of the benefits to the economy and in particular for Fiji’s tourism industry, it is necessary to amend the Daylight Saving Act 1998 to allow the daylight saving to be declared for a longer period.
As a result, daylight saving will begin from Sunday, November 29 at 2am to Sunday, April 25, 2010 at 3am.
“Apart from availability of more daylight time for sport, leisure and shopping, the working people are able to spend quality daylight time in the afternoons and evenings with their family and loved ones, including engaging in healthy activities such as gardening or going for a walk,” said Sayed-Khaiyum.
“In 1999, the Ministry of Labour reported that there was an overall increase in economic activity and productive work as a result of daylight saving.”
