The role of Fiji’s military will be a topic of discussion when the President’s Political Dialogue Forum convenes soon, it has been confirmed.
Independent interlocutors Dr Sitiveni Halapua and Robin Nair had drawn up a draft terms of reference and agenda, for the Forum which includes determining the proper role of the RFMF.
It also recommends changes to the 1997 Constitution and RFMF Act to prevent the future overthrow of democratically elected governments.
Also, the agenda includes the timeline for the next General Election and electoral reforms.
According to the 11-page report, a stable return to parliamentary rule is the central issue from which the agenda items for the proposed PPDF will flow and give shape to a measurable timeline for a general election.
Some of the terms of reference include the need to discuss and determine the various processes necessary to establish a timeline for a return to parliamentary democracy through a general election; examining and assessing the need for the reform of the current electoral system and amendment of the 1997 Constitution; and the need to address and examine outcomes from the People's Charter to identify timelines for implementation.
The interim government has invited political parties to a special meeting on March 13 where the agenda and the terms of reference will be discussed before the PPDF is convened.
