Fiji PM will not attend PNG forum
20/01/2009 |
Fiji’s interim Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama will not attend the Pacific Islands Forum Special Meeting in Papua New Guinea next week.
In a statement today, State media reports that Bainimarama “has decided to place the interest of the nation and those affected by the floods at the forefront”.
Instead, Bainimarama has written to Hon Toke Talagi, Premier of Niue and Chairman of PIF, seeking a deferment of the Port Moresby meeting on January 27 because he still wants to meet the Forum leaders.
Fiji is facing possible expulsion from the Forum for not holding promised democratic elections in March this year.
“I cannot be out of the country at this critical time when the nationwide flooding which Fiji experienced just a week ago has claimed loss of lives of 10 people and caused massive destruction to personal property, crops, businesses, industries and the nation’s infrastructure and related installations," Bainimarama said in his letter, according to State media.
“As Head of Government, my priority is to ensure that the affected people are properly looked after, the necessary assessments are undertaken of the damages caused and for me to oversee the availability of required resources for the much required reconstruction and rehabilitation works to bring back normalcy to lives of our people and for economic recovery.
“I, however, would like to be personally at the Special Meeting which the Leaders have sanctioned and it is for this reason that I have asked for a deferment.” The statement said Bainimarama has also written to Grand Chief, Sir Michael Somare about his inability to travel to Port Moresby given the Government of Papua New Guinea is the host for the PIF Special Meeting. Bainimarama is currently on a tour of the flood affected areas in the Northern Division and will return to Suva later in the week.

Good decision, people of Fiji should not forget that this is the same Brij Lal who has drafted the constitution which has divided the nation on racial lines. Being a learned in the field, one would expect fairness to all from him.

By not attending these mtgs & fronting up to his peers, he is only making the situation worse.

It would be better to attend this important meeting and discuss the situation of this country at this stage so they can find a solution to help. Now, we are facing hard times after floods and we need financial help and also the way forward to democracy. I hope VB will change his decision and attend this important meeting. Let your staff do the work while you are away.

Our nation is facing a natural disaster of a magnitude that we have not experienced for a long time. Leaders naturally should not abandon their people in a time of crisis. They should be there to help manage the team in the recovery process. The Forum should understand that the decision made by the interim Prime Minister is the right one to make at this moment in time. Assessments of the damage are still being made, people are still in evacuation centres while the cleaning up process has just started. It will take weeks to get things back to close to normality. Anyone else who still wants to push the issue of the IPM attending the Forum, stop politicising the situation in a time of crisis ... that's a coward's job. Get real for once in your life and stop being selfish and putting your agenda first before that of the nation & its people and you are not worth to be called a Fijian. If you are from the outside, then you are an enemy of this nation. Good decision Frank, the Forum can wait. My prayers are with those who are affected by the floods.

Good on you boss ... this is what a good leader does, looks after his people and doesn't go on holidays or meeting for a kava like your predecessor.

This is a good decision. When the boat is sinking, the priority is the boat and the people ... not the party next door. FB made a good critical decision. Siliva, please don't complain again about commitments. FB's first commitment is Fiji and its people. Next is foreign relations. Who are we going to make foreign relations when we don't have a home? Please think common sense and please have a heart.

Fiji can and will survive the disaster we are facing right now. But it will not survive if we are expelled from the Forum. We are already banished from the Commonwealth and EU. This our last hope. C'mon VB, you are the man.

It's a matter of priorities. Frank would be more useful in attending such a Forum from which if Fiji is removed, would be detrimental to the already fragile state of Fiji. In attending he would also be able to meet with other Pacific Island countries to state his case and also seek further assistance. There are a lot of pluses if he attends rather than staying.

Why should the PM attend this meeting - we should now learn to stand on our feet and try to meet this hardship head-on. Let's stop receiving handouts from other countries. Let's be a true Kai Viti, stand up and move on. We will face hardship at times but we should show them that we can at least help ourself. We should pray for those that were affected. Big Vinaka Vakalevu to those that have assisted and to those that donated.

We are talking about a couple of days visiting a neighbouring country, not a month's holiday in France.

Three days away would not make any difference to those who have no food on the table. It would be weeks before these people would get a help. At least FB could have explained his situation.
