Canadian pop star Justin Bieber had a big night at the American Music Awards, taking three prizes including the top honor, favorite artist of the year.

The other two awards bestowed on the 18-year-old Sunday were favorite pop/rock male artist and favorite pop/rock album for his record "Believe."

Rapper Nicki Minaj won the awards for favorite rap/hip hop album and favorite rap/hip hop artist.

Rihanna won a prize for best soul/R&B album for "Talk that Talk."

Taylor Swift took her fifth straight award for favorite country female artist.

The awards ceremony was held in Los Angeles. Fans chose winners by voting online.

French DJ David Guetta won the first-ever American Music Award for electronic dance music over DJs Calvin Harris and Skrillex.

"It's wonderful also to see electronic music recognized at this level in the U.S.," Guetta said in a taped acceptance speech.
