A 27-year-old man was sentenced to 2-years in prison today by the Suva High Court for a charge of manslaughter. Ritesh Ram who initially denied a charge is ineligible for parole until after a year. The court heard that on December 25, 2009, the deceased, Sunil Kumar, attended a carnival at around 8.30pm and left with Ravikash Rai and Narendra Prasad in a taxi driven by the latter. The deceased and two others approached and had challenged Ram where the confrontation resulted in death. The court heard Rai threw a stone and it hit Ram on the forehead after which the accused pulled out a knife and stabbed Kumar in the stomach. Kumar died eight months later on August 10, 2010.
High Court Judge, Justice Salesi Temo said a minimal term was given as Ram is a first offender, married with a son and had cooperated with the police. By Ropate Valemei
