In terms of urban management and urban planning, Fiji has adopted Singapore’s model as one of the models to base their reforms on.

This was revealed by the Minister for Local Government Colonel Lesi Natuva at the official meeting of the Singapore’s non-Resident High Commissioner to Fiji Verghese Matthews.

A govenrment statement said the meeting was to discuss areas of mutual interest between both countries.

Housing Authority of Fiji chief executive Alipate Naiorosui said housing remains a major issue and one of the challenges they face is technical assistance and funding.

“We are also exploring opportunities to partner with Singapore in areas of interest,” said Naiorosui.

The Ministry’s of Local Government and Housing director Kolinio Bola said in terms of housing, the department has to date assisted 2,442 individuals through leases and upgrades with 240 squatter settlements being upgraded.

Matthews highlighted Singapore’s growth over the years and discussed the various reforms and processes implemented that has provided for this growth.
