Fiji will be able to save FJD$40 million if farmers start planting rice locally instead of importing it.

Speaking to FijiLive Agriculture Permanent Secretary Colonel Mason Smith said they are working with rice farmers across the country to increase rice production in the North, Navua, Lakena and some other areas that are suitable for rice farming.

Smith said the ministry is also working with Fiji Sugar Corporation for sugarcane farmers to grow rice as well.

He said there is also a need for the revitalisation of small rice mills for rice harvest.

According to him, government will provide machines for the planting and harvesting rice.

Smith said the money which is used for importing rice can instead be used for health and education infrastructures.
