Residents of Nawaka and Solovi in Nadi are requesting the government to differ the school start date for another week.

Speaking to FijiLive some of the residents said they prepared well to send their children to school however, due to the current flood all their belongings including children’s school books and uniforms have been washed away.

A parent Rajen Kumar who has three children attending school said they won’t be going to school as scheduled because all their belongings have been lost in the flood.

Kumar said he doesn’t know how he is going to send his children to school.

“I don’t have enough money at the moment because my house has been completely destroyed by the flood water so I have to provide shelter to my family first,” he said.

Kumar said his only request to the government is to defer the school opening date by one week so that they can prepare their children and buy stationeries and books.

The villagers in Ba District, Drasa Settlement, Lomolomo Village, Bila Settlement and Moto Settlement also shared the similar sentiments.

Meanwhile some schools in the Western Division are currently being used as evacuation centres.

The Ministry of Education has directed that schools in the western division will open next Monday.
