Fiji’s National Disaster Management (DISMAC) Office has submitted an application of $1 million to the Prime Minister’s relief fund for the cartage of emergency water supplies to drought affected areas.
DISMAC acting director Pajiliai Dobui confirmed submitting the application. He said the money will be used to cater for requests that DISMAC had received from major divisional offices around the country.
“We have already submitted our application and as part of our internal report. It ($1M) will be used to meet the demands of the different commissions.”
Dobui also stated that with the funding, he is confident that the divisional offices will be able to handle the demands of the public.
“It’s (drought) not really that big and we cannot really compare it to countries like Africa and I’m sure that the commissions are competent in handling the demands of the public.”
In a media release, permanent secretary for Provincial Development, Manasa Vaniqi, said the funding request was in response to the prolonged dry spell experienced throughout the country which had left many communities especially those in the rural areas, without water for many weeks.
