Mel Gibson is in therapy for his toxic relationship with ex-girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva as friends rally to support the troubled Hollywood star.
As fresh tapes revealed Gibson's racist sledge about his Latino housekeeper and that he threatened his ex over lack of sex, friends claimed he was in treatment, news.com.au reports.
"He realised how unhealthy the relationship was and recognised they were in a bad place," a friend told People magazine.
"He wanted to figure out how to extricate himself from this unhealthy relationship peacefully and calmly. Which is what he did."
In one of the latest audio tapes, Gibson and Grigorieva are heard arguing about their housekeeper, a Latino.
"Do not use (her) at your house," Gibson allegedly tells Grigorieva.
"I will fire (the housekeeper) if she's at your house . . . I'll report her to the (expletive) people that take (expletive) money from the wetbacks, OK?"
News of his therapy treatment comes as veteran Aussie actor John Jarratt branded Grigorieva "disgusting" for leaking his violent rants.
Jarratt, who co-starred with Gibson in his first film Summer City, said Gibson was the victim and the claims were all "one-sided".
The Wolf Creek star, who had an angry voicemail message he left for his tenants leaked to Today Tonight three years ago, didn't hold back yesterday in a lengthy vent to Confidential.
"The despicable person in this is the woman, who has disgustingly taped this guy because he's extremely famous and tried to ruin his life," Jarratt said.
"She has taped an argument they are having in an acrimonious split - something that happened behind closed doors - and he's been made a mockery of.
"It's disgusting."
Jarratt, who thinks Gibson suffers from the quintessentially Aussie "foot-in-mouth syndrome", said more people should have empathy.
"I've had a few blues with my partner and they're not very nice, the 'C' word has been used on both sides. But no one has put that up on the internet, thankfully," he said.
The fallout over the leaked tapes continues with yet another one released today.
In the latest tape to be released, Gibson hurled insults at Grigorieva, threatening to burn down the house and demanding sex from her, entertainment website RadarOnline reported.
