The son of actor Michael Douglas was sentenced to five years in prison for drug trafficking after pleading guilty in New York, court officials said Tuesday.
Cameron Douglas, 32, was arrested in August in a New York hotel with large quantities of methamphetamine.
Michael Douglas, 65, attended the sentencing hearing, a spokesman for the federal court told AFP.
Judge Richard Berman said he took into consideration a number of letters he had received urging clemency.
Hollywood legend and "Spartacus" star Kirk Douglas, 93, wrote in a letter made public at the hearing that his greatest dream was to see his grandson succeed as an actor before he died.
Other celebrities, including Michael Douglas and his current wife Catherine Zeta-Jones, wrote to say that Cameron was more in need of detoxification treatment than prison.
The prosecution presented evidence that Cameron Douglas was selling large quantities of methamphetamine in addition to using the drugs himself. He either sent or transported packets of the drugs to New York from California and had cash payments sent by courier to a California hotel.
He was previously jailed in 1999 and 2007 on drug charges.
Douglas faced a maximum penalty of five years in jail. He faces five years of supervision after his release.
