Consultations will begin in Fiji next week on a new draft Media Industry Development Decree which establishes a media code of standards and ethics.

Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum said the draft decree “seeks to create professionalism and accountability in the media sector by setting up transparent processes, adopting practices from other jurisdictions”.

The draft decree establishes a Singapore-style Media Industry Development Authority which among other things will monitor compliance with the media codes of standard said Sayed-Khaiyum.

The decree also establishes an independent media tribunal which will hear complaints against media organisations and individuals.

The tribunal will have powers to hand down rulings.

Sayed-Khaiyum said the draft decree emphasises fair, accurate and responsible reporting and will establish a media code of standards including a code of ethics and practice and a general code of ethics for advertisements including advertising to children.

It also establishes a television program classification code and has provisions pertaining to cross-media ownership.
