Australia, New Zealand and Tonga have jointly funded an interim ferry service for Tonga with a charter vessel from Malaysia.
The interim charter will replace Princess Ashika which sunk off the Tongan coast on August 5, 2009 and is expected to commence service in April. Australia and New Zealand have each provided AUD$1.9 million while the Tongan government will have to cover costs such as fuel and vessel maintenance as well as take responsibility for on-shore management arrangements. Australian Foreign Affairs Minister Stephen Smith said in a statement that safe travel between the islands of Tonga is a vital lifeline for its people. Smith said the charter vessel Ajang Subuh has undergone an independent inspection by internationally recognised survey company London Off-shore Consultants. “The vessel has been found to be seaworthy and fit for purpose,” he added. * Get local and international rugby news & live updates/results on your phone.
