The Ratu Sir Lala Sukuna Day and National Youth Day will now cease to be holidays from now on, it has been confirmed.
According to a statement from the Prime Minister’s office, the Employment Relations Promulgation has been amended to remove these two public holidays.
The decision was made following a Cabinet meeting on March 18.
“Unlike Christmas, Boxing Day, Good Friday, Easter Monday, Queens Birthday, Diwali, Prophet Mohammed’s Birthday and Fiji Day, which have been public holidays since Independence, Ratu Sukuna Day and the National Youth Day have only been public holidays since 1991 and 2003 respectively.
“At different stages of our post independence history we also had public holidays for Prince Charles Birthdays, Bank holiday and Constitution Day. Ad hoc public holidays have also been declared.”
Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama has noted that while Ratu Sukuna Day and National Youth Day are important, we do not require specific holidays to commemorate these two occasions.
“By reducing the number of public holidays, we as a nation will be among other things, more focused on productivity and increased output,” the PM said.
