Villagers on the island of Cikobia are safe and well, days after Hurricane Tomas ravaged their island, it has been confirmed.

Cikobia elder Sanaila Cagituevei said Hurricane Tomas was the strongest and worst cyclone he had ever witnessed adding that its slow pace did not help the situation at all.

According to Cagituevei, the devastating winds hovered over their island for three days.

Cagituevei confirmed the island had suffered extensive damages to their roots crops and fruit trees such as coconut trees, tavioka, banana trees and uvi adding most of the greenery has turned brown.

Drinking water he said, had also been contaminated due to the sea spray during the height of the cyclone.

The villagers are also thankful for the quick response by authorities in relief efforts.

The survey team that visited Cikobia comprised officials from the Ministries of Education, Health and Agriculture as well as representatives from the Fiji Red Cross, Telecom Fiji and the Roko Tui Macuata.

The team continued its survey to Naqelelevu after Cikobia and is travelling on the RFNS Kula.
