An assessment of the cost of damage caused to Fiji by Tropical Cyclone Tomas will be ready next week says the Disaster Management Office (DISMAC).
DISMAC acting director Pajiliai Dobui told FijiLive his department expects to establish the cost of damage by next week when reports will be received from ground assessment teams currently visiting islands devastated by Tomas.
“We are now continuously receiving further detailed reports from teams and we should be able to come up with the real cost of damage such as how many houses have been destroyed, how many needs to be rebuilt and the cost for these buildings,” Dobui said.
He said DISMAC needed the figures so that the government can consider how much they will need to spend on rehabilitation works.
“This will also be a guide for donor agencies to consider for their assistance.”
Also expected in the report will be the cost of damage to schools, health centers and hospitals.
The Lau group of islands has been assessed as the worst hit, with relief and assistance teams arriving Lau and the northern and eastern divisions yesterday.
