Three naval boats instead of two will leave Suva for the Lomaiviti, Lau groups and Cikobia, taking with them relief supplies, DISMAC has confirmed.
According to DISMAC operations officer Anthony Blake, an assessment team is also on the way there, the Red Cross and a health team.
“They will be communicating with us from the islands so we will have two Government vessels on stand-by to take supplies after the naval boats.
“The Commissioner Northern is currently undertaking aerial surveys,” Blake said.
He said the immediate need is shelter for people who had been affected like tarpaulins.
“The report we’re getting from the ground is that there has been extensive damage in Lau to schools and houses.
“Right now the figures we’re getting are preliminary but once we get a full assessment, we’ll be able to know the extent of damage,” Blake said.
