Fiji’s Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama pored over cyclone tracking maps while sharing biscuits and tea with military personnel in the company of President Ratu Epeli Nailatikau and Police Commissioner Esala Teleni following a briefing in Suva this morning.
The national leaders were briefed at the National Disaster Management Office (DISMAC) by acting director Pajiliai Dobui.
Also present were senior military officer Brigadier Mohammed Aziz and Information permanent secretary Lieutenant Colonel Neumi Leweni, who announced afterwards that the curfew for the central and divisions had been extended until 6am tomorrow.
The country’s disaster management services and other government arms are beginning to respond to the damage caused by Cyclone Tomas as damage reports begin to slowly filter in.
The Ministry of Education has asked school heads to report any damage to school properties to the ministry headquarters.
The ministry said planning for schools to resume can only be possible after a careful analysis of damage.
DISMAC has announced that some health facilities in the north have been partly damaged while other centres are facing a blackout.
A DISMAC statement said the roof of Lagi Health Centre in Caukaudrove had been partly damaged while communication to Rabi Hospital has been disrupted and telephone lines to the Nabouwalu Hospital are not working.
