Communication with the Lau group is out of action and Radio Tonga is broadcasting messages from disaster management officials in Suva to the islands in the group as Hurricane Tomas approaches.
Disaster management official Pajiliai Dobui told FijiLive contact with emergency operation centres in Lau had been severed due to damage Hurricane Tomas was making in the area.
“We can’t get in touch with them,” Dobui confirmed.
He said they were using Comsat mobile phones to communicate with the two centres in Vanuavatu and Namuka, which don’t work anymore because of damaged infrastructure caused by Tomas.
He said they have since resorted to sending messages through Radio Fiji, whose AM frequency has nationwide coverage.
Dobui said Radio Fiji was also sending the messages to Radio Tonga to broadcast from Nuku’alofa for people in Ono and Vatoa who are closer to Tonga.
