Despite Tropical Cyclone Tomas being upgraded to a Category Four hurricane status, damage reports at this stage are minimal, DISMAC has announced.
At a press conference minutes ago, DISMAC acting director Pajiliai Dobui said there have been several reports of damage in eastern Lau, Taveuni, Cikobia, and Nabouwalu.
“Mainly the damage is broken power lines and fallen trees,” Dobui said.
DISMAC officer Anthony Blake said the focus of operations is now on the north.
“In the east we have reports of strong winds and we have three evacuation centres there with 147 people in them. In the central division, there are evacuation centres with 62 people already in them, the latest is the Vodafone Arena and the Kalabu Fijian School,” Blake said.
Also, additional funding has been requested for operations in the north and government has approved funding of up to $30,000 from the initial $10,000.
“We have two evacuation centres in the Ra province.”
Blake added that the last flight out of Nadi International Airport was at 3pm today and all domestic airports have been closed.
DISMAC has also confirmed that emergency mortuaries are being set up around the country.
