Fiji’s Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama is presently being briefed on the impact and projected path of Hurricane Tomas by officials of the national disaster management office (DISMAC) in Suva.
The briefing is being conducted by DISMAC acting director Pajiliai Dobui and his team.
Also at the briefing are Ministry of Information permanent secretary Lieutenant Colonel Neumi Leweni, senior army officer Lieutenant Colonel Mohammed Aziz, police commissioner Esala Teleni and senior government officials.
Latest DISMAC reports are that the islands of Cikobia, northern Lau, Rabi, Kioa, Taveuni and Lomaiviti are being battered by strong winds.
The system is expected to go right over eastern Vanua Levu, Tavueni and the Lau group.
“Flooding is expected to occur in the northern, central and eastern divisions especially for low-lying areas,” said Director of Meteorology Rajendra Prasad.
The central division is expected to experience damaging gale force winds from tonight.
The western division is expected to experience strong to marginal gale force winds of 25 to 35 knots.
