Fiji police have issued a nationwide curfew effective midnight Sunday while towns in Vanua Levu are without electricity as Cyclone Tomas moves in at 210kmph.
Police spokesperson Atunaisa Sokomuri said the duration of the curfew was “indefinite” and its imposition is to prevent people from moving around.
He said only those classed under “essential services” were allowed mobility, including the media.
Rokomuri told FijiLive “vehicle passes” were available from the nearest Central Police Station to allow them free movement.
Meanwhile, the Fiji Electricity Authority (FEA) confirms the whole of Savusavu town was tonight without electricity.
FEA spokesperson John O’Connor said the harsh weather conditions they were experiencing in Savusavu was preventing their workers from attending to repairs.
“We will do so when the situation improves tomorrow night,” O’Connor said.
Cyclone Tomas was expected to pass Udu Point and be inside the Fiji group midnight Sunday and the eye of the storm centering Labasa midday Monday.
