Tropical Cyclone Tomas has picked up speed since this morning and will intensify in at least 18 hours time, the Nadi weather office has confirmed.
Director Meteorology Rajendra Prasad confirmed that since this morning the system had intensified.
“By midday today, the system was upgraded to a Category three hurricane.
“Though it was moving rather slowly earlier on, the system is now expected to move faster towards Fiji,” Prasad said.
The cyclone is expected to hit Vanua Levu, Cikobia and Rabi later this evening.
While a Category 3 cyclone has winds of up to 64 – 85 knots, there are indications that Tomas could develop into Category 4 with winds of up to 86-107 knots.
